What is Nordhavn Yachts?
Nordhavn Yachts is the ocean-going motor-yacht brand of California-based Pacific Asian Enterprises, commonly known as PAE. Nordhavn specializes in full-displacement trawlers and expedition yachts designed for efficient long-range cruising, ocean passages and extended living aboard. Its yachts are known for protected pilothouses, substantial fiberglass construction, large fuel capacities, practical machinery spaces and systems intended to support operation far from conventional service facilities.
Most Nordhavns are traditional displacement-speed passagemakers, although the range also includes specialized models such as the semi-displacement Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot and the fishing-oriented Nordhavn 75 Expedition Yachtfisher. The larger 80-, 86-, 96-, 100- and 120-foot models bring Nordhavn’s expedition philosophy into the professionally crewed luxury-yacht and superyacht categories.
Who founded Nordhavn, and when did the company begin building powerboats?
Pacific Asian Enterprises was formed in 1974 by Jim Leishman, Dan Streech and Joe Meglen. The company began as a yacht brokerage and importer of Taiwanese-built cruising sailboats before developing its own Mason sailing-yacht line. Jeff Leishman later joined PAE and became the naval architect responsible for the design philosophy that would lead to Nordhavn.
The first Nordhavn 46 was completed and shipped in early 1989. The name Nordhavn—Norwegian for “North Harbor”—was selected because the yacht’s profile and purpose were reminiscent of North Sea fishing vessels. The N46 helped establish the idea that a production motor yacht could be designed specifically for reliable, private ocean passagemaking rather than only coastal cruising.
Where are Nordhavn Yachts built?
Nordhavns are designed, engineered, specified and managed by PAE, with construction completed at specialized partner shipyards in Asia. Different model families are assigned to different yards according to size, materials, tooling and production requirements. Long-established construction partners include Ta Shing Yacht Building in Taiwan and South Coast Marine’s facilities in Xiamen, China. The Nordhavn 71, for example, is built at Ta Shing in Taiwan.
The Nordhavn 41 and 51 were built in Turkey, but PAE announced on July 28, 2026, that production at that facility had ended. Regardless of construction location, PAE controls the designs, molds, specifications, project management, commissioning and owner-support process. New Nordhavns are sold directly through PAE’s sales organization rather than through a conventional independent-dealer network.
What Nordhavn models are currently available?
Following the retirement of the Nordhavn 41 and 51, the practical new-build range begins with the Nordhavn 46MKII and Nordhavn 475 and extends through the Nordhavn 120. The published portfolio includes the:
Nordhavn 46MKII
Nordhavn 475
Nordhavn 52
Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot
Nordhavn 60
Nordhavn 625
Nordhavn 63
Nordhavn 68
Nordhavn 71
Nordhavn 75 Expedition Yachtfisher
Nordhavn 76
Nordhavn 80
Nordhavn 86
Nordhavn 96
Nordhavn 100
Nordhavn 120
The N46MKII is the modern successor to the original Nordhavn 46, while the N475 provides a different 47-foot-class layout and accommodation plan. The N52 through N71 models appeal to experienced couples and families seeking increasingly greater range, storage and living space. The N80 and larger yachts offer expedition capability with the volume, amenities and crew accommodations associated with luxury superyachts.
Why did Nordhavn stop building the N41 and N51?
PAE retired the Nordhavn 41 and Nordhavn 51 because economic conditions made continued production in Turkey financially unpredictable—not because the models lacked demand or experienced quality problems. PAE cited high inflation and a government-managed currency that made it prohibitively expensive for the Turkish construction partner to continue honoring long-term price commitments.
Production ended after 54 combined N41 and N51 deliveries, including 44 Nordhavn 41s. PAE supplied additional capital to complete boats already under contract and honor the agreed retail pricing. The company also stated that the final boats from the Turkish facility were among the finest to carry the Nordhavn name. Both models are now primarily pre-owned opportunities, and PAE said their molds would be destroyed in keeping with its normal process for discontinued models.
What is a full-displacement Nordhavn, and how fast does it travel?
A full-displacement Nordhavn is designed to remain supported by the water throughout its operating range rather than climbing onto plane. This hull form requires substantially less horsepower than a planing or semi-displacement yacht and is optimized for efficiency, carrying capacity, predictable offshore motion and extended operation at moderate speeds.
Most full-displacement Nordhavns operate within an approximate 7- to 12-knot speed range, depending on waterline length, engines, loading and conditions. Their greatest efficiency is generally found slightly below theoretical hull speed, where relatively small diesel engines can move a heavily provisioned yacht over very long distances. Buyers who need higher cruising speeds may consider the Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot, which uses a semi-displacement hull and is designed for approximately 18- to 20-knot maximum speeds.
Are Nordhavn Yachts well built and good in rough water?
Nordhavns are engineered specifically for offshore passagemaking, with heavy construction, substantial ballast and systems intended to support self-sufficient operation. The underwater portion of a traditional Nordhavn hull uses solid fiberglass laminate with vinylester resin, reinforced by longitudinal and transverse stringers. Forward sections receive additional laminate for collision protection, and watertight bulkheads and doors are incorporated where the design requires them.
Nordhavn also devotes considerable attention to stability, weight distribution and motion control. Most models can be equipped with active-fin stabilizers, while some owners use paravanes for underway or at-anchor roll reduction. PAE says Nordhavns are ballasted at approximately 10% of their unloaded displacement to improve righting ability and offshore behavior. No yacht is suitable for every sea state, however; safe operation still depends on maintenance, loading, weather planning and the captain’s experience.
What are the most popular Nordhavn models?
The Nordhavn 46, 40, 52, 55 and 68 are among the brand’s most recognizable and successful models. More than 80 examples of the original Nordhavn 46 were built, making it one of the designs that established the modern production-passagemaker market. The Nordhavn 40 became internationally famous when an otherwise standard boat completed a 26,000-mile circumnavigation in approximately 27 weeks during 2001 and 2002.
The Nordhavn 52 reached at least hull number 82 in November 2025, while the Nordhavn 68 reached hull number 45 in December 2025. Earlier company history also records more than 50 Nordhavn 55 deliveries. These numbers demonstrate the strong acceptance of Nordhavn’s midsize passagemakers, although current popularity can also be influenced by the limited availability of individual pre-owned boats.
What engines and backup systems are used in Nordhavn Yachts?
Smaller traditional Nordhavns are commonly designed around a single main diesel engine with a separate wing engine for emergency propulsion. A single main engine can reduce fuel consumption, noise, vibration and maintenance, while the wing engine provides independent “get-home” capability if the primary propulsion system becomes unavailable. Larger Nordhavns are more commonly configured with twin engines because of their size and propeller requirements.
Nordhavn has installed engines from manufacturers including John Deere, Lugger, Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU, MAN and Yanmar, depending on the model and production year. Many single-engine Nordhavns use dry exhaust systems and recessed keel coolers, eliminating seawater from the engine-cooling and exhaust process. Generators, fuel-transfer systems, stabilizers, hydraulic equipment, watermakers, communications systems and substantial battery banks are common because owners may remain underway or at anchor for long periods without shoreside support.
Can a Nordhavn be owner-operated and used as a liveaboard?
Yes, many Nordhavns are designed for experienced owner-operators and are exceptionally well suited to extended or full-time living aboard. The 46MKII, 475, 52, 60 and other midsize models provide protected pilothouses, private staterooms, full galleys, climate control, storage and machinery access intended for cruising couples or families who manage the yacht themselves.
Owner operation is not limited only to smaller boats. Nordhavn specifically describes the 71 as a yacht created for buyers who want the appearance and amenities of a larger model but still want the ability to manage without permanent crew. Larger yachts such as the N80, N86, N96, N100 and N120 may benefit from or require professional captains, engineers and service crew because of their size, systems and tender-handling requirements.
How does Nordhavn compare with Kadey-Krogen, Selene, Fleming, Bering and Outer Reef?
Nordhavn occupies the highly specialized end of the long-range trawler and expedition-yacht market, placing greater emphasis on ocean-crossing capability and system redundancy than many recreational trawler-style brands. Buyers may compare Nordhavn with Kadey-Krogen, Selene, Bering, Outer Reef and selected Fleming models, but differences in hull form, speed, construction and intended operation are substantial.
Compared with a semi-displacement Fleming or Outer Reef, a traditional Nordhavn generally cruises more slowly but uses less horsepower and carries the fuel, stores and equipment needed for longer passages. Kadey-Krogen also specialized in full-displacement cruising, while Bering emphasizes metal-hulled explorer yachts and Selene offers several displacement and semi-displacement designs. This is a market-positioning assessment; buyers should compare exact models, loaded displacement, fuel capacity, range, stabilizers, engine-room access and certification rather than relying only on brand reputation.
How do Nordhavn owners use their yachts, and are they suitable for the Great Lakes or Great Loop?
Nordhavn owners use their yachts for ocean crossings, circumnavigations, high-latitude exploration, seasonal migrations, coastal cruising and months- or years-long living aboard. The Nordhavn 40 circumnavigation and the 2004 Nordhavn Atlantic Rally demonstrated the brand’s long-distance mission in highly visible ways, while private owners continue to use Nordhavns for travel through Alaska, the Pacific, Europe, the Caribbean and other remote cruising grounds.
Nordhavns can also be used on the Great Lakes, where their pilothouses, accommodations and substantial systems support extended travel between ports. Great Loop suitability must be evaluated model by model. Smaller Nordhavns may be workable with careful air-draft, draft and route planning, while larger yachts can exceed bridge, lock, marina or haul-out limitations. For example, the N63 has a published air draft of approximately 29 feet 7 inches, illustrating why buyers must physically measure the individual yacht and plan the route before assuming Loop compatibility.
What awards has Nordhavn Yachts received?
The Nordhavn 41 won Best Yacht Design under 24 meters at the 2021 International Yacht & Aviation Awards. The N41 was also selected as the 2021 Boat of the Year by readers of Power & Motoryacht, giving the compact passagemaker both design-industry and owner-reader recognition.
The Nordhavn 80 was subsequently shortlisted for two categories at the 2023 International Yacht & Aviation Awards, including Best Motor Yacht Design from 25 to 40 meters. Finalist or shortlist status should be distinguished from a category victory. Nordhavn’s reputation is also strongly connected to voyage achievements, including the N40 circumnavigation and the successful organization of the 2004 Nordhavn Atlantic Rally, which received a Motor Boats & Yachting Best of the Year honor.
How much does a Nordhavn cost, and what should buyers inspect?
Nordhavn pricing varies from several hundred thousand dollars for an older, smaller passagemaker to several million dollars for a late-model expedition yacht. As an August 23, 2026 snapshot, Nordhavn’s official brokerage page included a 2000 Nordhavn 40 at $349,000, several older Nordhavn 46s from approximately $395,000 to $449,000, a 2017 Nordhavn 63 at $1.95 million and a 2018 Nordhavn 76 at $4.9 million. A completed 2026 N41 was offered on a request-price basis. These are asking prices, not completed sales, and newer or larger Nordhavns may cost substantially more.
A pre-owned Nordhavn should receive a comprehensive hull and systems survey, diesel-engine and generator inspections, oil analysis, haul-out and sea trial. Buyers should pay particular attention to:
Main and wing engines, transmissions and dry-exhaust equipment
Keel coolers, shafts, propellers, rudders and steering
Stabilizers, paravanes, thrusters and hydraulic systems
Fuel, water and waste tanks
Generators, battery banks, inverters and shore-power systems
Watermakers, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration
Windows, doors, deck moisture and previous fiberglass repairs
Navigation, satellite communications and safety equipment
Maintenance logs, spare parts and long-range cruising upgrades
The survey should be performed by professionals familiar with full-displacement passagemakers, because a Nordhavn’s machinery and redundancy can be considerably more complex than those of a conventional coastal cruiser.
